In March, Android 10 will celebrate the anniversary of its first beta version. It is around this date that we expect Google to present the future system update: Android 11. After a high-flying version 10, it will be difficult for the Mountain View company to do better. and yet, there are a number of features that are sorely lacking in Android.
While waiting to see what Google is really preparing, here is our wish list of features that we would like to see appear on Android 11. This is essentially based on what is available on iOS and from manufacturers, as well as what has already seen through bits of code.
Android 11:NEARBY SHARING
It’s a certainty: Google is working on a feature similar to Apple’s AirDrop . It is a very simple way to share everything and anything with another device very quickly using identification via Bluetooth, then sending via direct WiFi.
This functionality has several advantages. It can be compatible with a large number of devices, does not require a third-party application and remains accessible in a few clicks in addition to sharing even the largest files at high speed.
Several manufacturers are already working on an alternative, such as Samsung , Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi . We hope that Google will soon be able to offer a universal version compatible with smartphones of all brands to prevent everyone from having their own version.
Android 11:BETTER ONE HAND MODE
Our smartphone screens are getting bigger and bigger. It is a real joy for the consumption of multimedia content, but it complicates certain interactions with one hand. To reach an item that is in a higher corner of the screen, it is often necessary to use your second hand or change the way you hold the smartphone.
To avoid this problem, many manufacturers have developed a “one-hand” mode allowing the screen to be reduced in one edge of the screen. But it must be admitted, it is often not very ergonomic and the reduction of the display area reduces all the icons on which one seeks to click, which makes the manipulation sometimes imprecise.
On this point, we would like to see a “One hand” mode similar to that of iOS. A small swipe of the finger on the bottom of the screen allows you to descend the display area not in a corner, but on the lower part of the screen. The upper zone then becomes accessible and readable while interacting with it.Convenient !
Android 11:SECRET FILES
Android has often integrated features that already existed, either from partner brands or through third-party applications. Taking inspiration from the many customization features of Nova Launcher could bring interesting elements to the operating system.
One of them caught our eye particularly: secret files. They take the form of an application icon on the home screen. Click on it and the application will launch, but swipe your finger up there and a folder will open. This allows in particular to keep at hand applications that you use regularly, but also not enough to want to make an icon on your main screen.
SCREEN CAPTURE WITH SCROLLING AND VIDEO
There are plenty of ways to take a screenshot on Android , and depending on the brand of your smartphone, you may be able to do more than the version available on Google Pixels. Indeed, they can just take a screenshot with the native tools available. On this point, we would like Android 11 to be inspired by interfaces like Emotion UI and many others that allow taking a screenshot “with scrolling”. This allows you to scroll through a page while extending the capture, which is ideal for making a copy of a web page for example.
Furthermore, Android 11 should allow you to take a video capture of your screen. The absence of this feature is all the more frustrating it was available in some beta Android 10 Q .
Samsung has DeX , Huawei has its PC mode and even the beta of Android Q had a PC mode ! However, this functionality is no longer present on the final version of Android 10. Too bad, being able to transform your smartphone into a real computer by plugging in a dongle connecting it to the screen and the keyboard can have a very practical side.
The existing solutions are not perfect and we can easily imagine that Google did not want to launch a product that is not finished ( it would not be the only one …). We would nevertheless like to see this happen natively in Android in order to offer a universal version and prevent proprietary options from multiplying, confusing the message as much for the consumer as for the developers who will have to adapt their applications and services to such configurations.
A PROGRAMMABLE DARK THEME
Android 10 finally has a dark system theme capable of automatically managing the design of all compatible applications. However, it only offers two positions: on or off.
With Android 11, we would like Google to be inspired by what is done elsewhere – at Samsung on One UI for example – and offer a little more personalization at this level. It would be fashionable to propose an adjustment of the activation time range or an automatic activation depending on the ambient light or the hours of sunrise and sunset. We also know that Google is working well on this feature .
A SYSTEM CANCELLATION
On a computer, the keyboard shortcut CTRL + Z (or CMD + Z on macOS) is the best ally of the clumsy. It makes it possible to cancel the last action. If you have deleted all the contents of an email by mistake, press these two keys and your text will reappear as if by magic.
On iOS, the equivalent is available with the system cancel function. Whether you are in the menus of your iPhone or on a third-party application, it is always possible to cancel what you have just done in the blink of an eye. Google, if you read us …
These are our wishes for outstanding functions that we would like to see appear on Android 11, but this future update will certainly bring, in addition to the major new features, lots of small improvements. Through a few pieces of code, some have already discovered for example that the system could remove the 4 GB limit for video capture , better management of the RAM , or an airplane mode that does not deactivate Bluetooth .
Well, that of course is for those who will have Android 11, others are still waiting for the deployment of Android 10.
